Nik Stewart: I like to surround myself with like-minded people. Their faith inspires me. God inspires me. Positive quotes and people inspire me. Being underestimated inspires me. My journey, who I am becoming and who I want to be, inspires me. Colossill: When and why did you get started? Was it for the glamour? The money? Pure kicks? Nik Stewart: I was an up and coming track star in school, who had a very bright future. Sports was all I knew and what I was known for. I was never considered “the pretty girl” so I worked really hard and did really well at sports. By the time high school hit and puberty took over I had a different outlook on the way people saw me and saw themselves. All the pretty girls had boyfriends and were popular, and the boys basically treated me like I was a jock. I thought to myself well, I am beautiful, smart and talented. My competitive side kicked in, and I figured I can beat them at their own game. So I became a model. At first it was for pure kicks, something to prove that I could be good at as well, then the feedback was way better than I expected. So after graduating from high school I decided to continue, just to see how far I could actually take this and now here I am. Colossill: Who are some of your favorite models and designers, and why? I’m inspired by models that have staying power in the industry. The women that are still around because they have maximized or rather expanded their brands. Kate Moss, Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, Elle Macpherson are all inspirations. [Pat Cleveland, Bethann Hardison, Grace Jones] With growing opportunities to be on the red carpet I’m into designers that are easily accessible in the US. Diane Von Furstenberg, I love her clothes and I love that she empowers women in the fashion industry. I’ve worn Tamara Mellon, House of CB and other emerging designers. I love clothes overall and have a deep connection with pieces that suit my body. Colossill: Which fashion magazines, websites, blogs, and catalogs do you visit most often? Fashionista.com. Colossill: How would you describe your style? Eclectic and sultry. I aim to always wear pieces that compliment my body. It’s not about the trend, it’s about what feels and looks good on me. Colossill: How do you prepare for a modeling shoot? The first thing I do is to understand what the shoot will be about. Once I’ve grasped the essentials then it’s easy for me to apply myself towards a successful shoot. Colossill: What is fun and rewarding about modeling? The process from beginning to end of a shoot. Bringing the designer’s or photographer’s vision to reality that is what is fun about the business I’m in. Also, traveling has been very rewarding. Colossill: What advice do you have for other aspiring models? Be true to yourself. The industry has a way of trying to reinvent you to fit the next trend. However, in living up to your true self you will attract the right people and situations that fosters the budding career you crave.
